Financial Aid
The Melrose School awards financial grants on the basis of need. The School uses the services of the School and Students Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. SSS is an organization that provides schools you choose with an analysis of your family’s finances and suggests your contribution for educational expenses. We subscribe to the principles of SSS and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. At The Melrose School, financial aid is not awarded to students entering the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs.
Please note, applications for financial aid must be made by both prospective and returning families every year. Application forms are to be mailed directly to Pittsburgh by March 1, 2008, and you will receive a financial aid decision letter from The Melrose School on April 1, 2008. For quicker processing of your application, complete the forms online at www.nais.org/financialaid/sss. Please be aware that any late applications for financial aid will be considered contingent upon remaining funds. We strongly urge you to prepare your 2007 tax return first—the financial aid application is much easier to complete once you have completed IRS forms.
For returning families: Your signed enrollment agreement and deposit are due on February 29, 2008. Financial aid applicants will not be considered for aid if their enrollment agreement and deposit is not returned by this date. Financial aid decision letters are mailed home on April 1, 2008. If no award is offered, or the aid that is offered is insufficient and you choose to withdraw your child, your deposit will be returned to you at that time.
The following documents must be mailed to SSS in Pittsburgh (please keep photocopies):
- Parent’s Financial Statement (PFS)
- A check or money order for the appropriate fee. Be sure to indicate our school code in the appropriate blank on the PFS: 5005. SSS has a “help line” at (866) 387-2601, or www. sssfinancialaid@ets.org should you have questions as you complete the paperwork.
The following documents should be mailed directly to The Melrose School by March 15, 2008:
- A photocopy of both parents’ signed 2006 and 2007 IRS forms, including 1040’s, W-2’s, and all schedules.
- The Non-custodial Parent’s Financial Statement, if applicable.
- The Business/Farm Statement, if your family owns either.
Again, financial aid applicants will not be considered for aid if we don’t receive these documents by March 15, 2008.
We stress that we consider an independent school education to require the active financial support of both biological parents, if applicable. We pledge to treat these documents with the utmost confidentiality. We are committed to providing a Melrose education to as many superior scholars and citizens as possible, regardless of their family’s means, and your timely application means we can give your daughter or son the consideration she or he deserves.
