Scouts Tear Up the Track at the Annual Pinewood Derby

Each year, the Scouts are given the challenge of turning a block of wood, four nails, and some wheels into a racecar worthy of the Pinewood Derby. The rules are simple- the car can’t weigh more than 5 ounces, the finished car must use only the parts supplied in the kit, and the boys must be ready to have lots of fun!

This year, the Melrose Scouts in grades 1-4 were encouraged to make cars in a “Rescue Vehicle” theme and they competed on their own Pinewood Derby track, in a series of races. Points were tabulated and then there was a final round to determine the winners.

Although all of the participants were awarded ribbons and prizes, the first, second and third place trophies were taken home by Ryan Seller, Ben Holloway and Matthew Brugnatelli. All of the boys should be very proud of their work!

On the way out of the gym, some boys were already dreaming of their plans for next year’s car…
