British Change Ringers Ap-“peal” to The Melrose School
The Melrose School and The Melrose Guild of Change Ringers hosted a British tour group of eight change ringers on Friday, October 3rd. The Tudors College Youth Group, led by Mr. Rick Shallcross, rang a “peal” (5000+ consecutive strikes of each bell over the course of 3 hours) from the eight bells in The Melrose Tower. Dating back hundreds of years, the art of change ringing involves each ringer using a single rope to strike a bell in concert with other ringers to create beautiful sound waves. The Melrose Tower, dedicated in 1974, and Trinity Church Tower on Wall Street in New York City, are the only bell towers equipped for change ringing in the state of New York. Practices for change ringing are held Sundays, from 2:45 – 5:00pm, at The Melrose School and are open to the public.
