The Melrose School

Robert Billings named new Headmaster

THE MELROSE SCHOOL APPOINTS ROBERT W. BILLINGS NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL

After an intense and well-organized search, the Board of Trustees has chosen Robert W. Billings as the new Head of The Melrose School. Mr. Billings is very well qualified, having spent all of his adult life teaching children and directing schools. Comfortably interacting with children and adults alike, he is a strong fit for our school’s culture. The Search Committee included faculty members, teachers, Board members, parents, and a member of the Community of the Holy Spirit.

Mr. Billings brings years of experience in administration, teaching and development. Most recently, he was Director of Development for Saint Michael Academy in Manhattan. Previously, he served as Principal at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Scarsdale, NY, for 21 years. He led the school to great success and his accomplishments will serve him well in his new role. At IHM, Mr. Billings revitalized a school faced with an eight-year history of declining enrollment. He repositioned the school as a more attractive option in a highly competitive area. He motivated faculty and forged improved relationships with parents, resulting in consistent enrollment increases, with the school operating close to maximum enrollment, resulting in the improved financial standing of the school. His successes led to the school being named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education in 2004.

The new headmaster is a graduate of Regis High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Medieval Studies from Fordham University; a Master of Science degree in Education from Iona College; and a Professional Diploma in Educational Administration and Supervision from Iona.
